Assistance when CGMA Sponsor is not Present

Too often, emergencies occur when the CGMA Sponsor is underway, deployed, TAD, or otherwise not available.  The good news: CGMA can provide emergency assistance to a spouse when the CGMA sponsor is not present to fill out the assistance forms.  There are three ways that this can occur.

The first two ways allow a spouse to receive assistance from a Representative without trying to get in touch with the CGMA Sponsor, which makes the procedure a lot faster in emergency cases.  The third way is just as effective, but it may take more time to process.

  1. The spouse has a CGMA form 16 (pdf) , Pre-Authorization form, which acts like a specific power of attorney.  A  member can fill it out for their spouse before getting underway, and state what dates the form is valid for and for how much the spouse would be allowed to request in case of an emergency.  This way, you are not waiting on a response from the CGMA Sponsor in order to cut the spouse a check if an emergency arises.

  2. The spouse has a general power of attorney.  This allows them to request assistance in the absence of the member.

  3. The spouse has none of these forms, but you can issue assistance once the CGMA Sponsor has given permission.  This should be in the form of email, fax, or message, not verbal, so there is a record of the client's consent on file. Depending on how easy it is to get in touch with the Sponsor, this could take a few hours or a few days.

It's important to remember that when issuing assistance, you are using the CGMA Sponsor's information, and the CGMA Sponsor will be responsible for repaying.

We suggest keeping CGMA Form 16 (pdf) , Pre-Authorization forms, on hand, and distributing them at pre-deployment meetings.

You can find all CGMA forms online
