Standing Watch in a Moment of Loss: How CGMA Helped PO3 Nicholas Say Goodbye
When Duty Meets Distance
As a Coast Guard family stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, PO3 Austin Nicholas, his spouse, and their three young children know the meaning of resilience. Living in such a remote, high-cost area leaves little room for emergencies—every paycheck is stretched thin across rising costs of groceries, utilities, and childcare.
So when Austin received the heartbreaking news that his grandmother—who had raised him—was nearing the end of her life in Texas, the cost of last-minute airfare felt like an impossible barrier between him and a final goodbye. “Over $3,500 just for flights,” he said. “I felt helpless.”
CGMA Answers the Call
That’s when a shipmate reminded him of Coast Guard Mutual Assistance. From the first call, CGMA was ready—not just with financial relief, but with compassion and urgency. “They didn’t just offer a loan—they listened, understood, and acted quickly,” Austin said.
Because of CGMA, Austin made it home in time. He held his grandmother’s hand, shared his gratitude, and found peace in honoring her legacy.
More Than Financial Help
“This wasn’t just financial help,” Austin shared. “It was dignity, connection, and peace during one of the hardest times of my life. CGMA was there when it truly mattered—and I’m forever grateful.”
At Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, we stand ready to help Coast Guard members when it matters most. Through Emergency Travel Assistance and other vital programs, and thanks to the generosity of CGMA donors and supporters, we ensure no one walks alone in moments of crisis.
