Smooth Moves Start Here: How CGMA Eases the Stress of PCS 

For military members, Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders are a part of life. But just because they’re routine doesn’t mean they’re easy. Every PCS move brings a new set of challenges—unexpected expenses and delays, temporary lodging needs, and the emotional strain of uprooting families. That’s where Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) steps in. 

As the official relief society for the U.S. Coast Guard, CGMA is committed to supporting members and their families through every stage of service—including relocation. Each year, hundreds of Coast Guard families turn to CGMA’s PCS programs for practical support that helps transform a stressful transition into a manageable mission. 

PCS Support That Makes a Difference 

CGMA offers a range of PCS-specific assistance to help active duty members cover the hidden or unexpected costs that come with moving. These programs include: 

• PCS Child Care Reimbursement: Childcare gaps are a common concern during PCS transitions. CGMA helps cover ouPCS Child Care Grant: Helps reimburse childcare costs during a PCS move — especially while movers are packing, unpacking, or handling HHG (Household Goods). Eligible families can receive up to $150 per child (maximum 3 children / $450 total per year). It covers childcare within 60 days before or after reporting to a new duty station.
  
• Payroll Loan: Provides short-term financial assistance to Coast Guard members experiencing military pay disruptions or delays. The interest-free loan helps cover essential living expenses and may also include travel-related reimbursement support during financial hardship situations caused by pay issues or PCS-related disruptions.
  
• Closing Cost Loan: Helps Coast Guard families manage the upfront expenses of purchasing a home during a PCS or relocation. The interest-free loan can assist with closing costs, down payments, and other home-buying expenses that create temporary financial strain.
  
• Rental Assistance Loan: Helps Coast Guard members and families cover upfront rental expenses during a PCS or unexpected housing transition. The interest-free loan can assist with security deposits, first month’s rent, application fees, and other move-in costs that create short-term financial strain.
  
• POV Shipment Loan: Helps Coast Guard families offset the cost of shipping a Privately Owned Vehicle (POV) during eligible PCS moves. Assistance may help cover transportation-related expenses and financial gaps associated with vehicle shipment when military coverage is limited or unavailable.

Behind every loan or grant is a story of a family helped in a moment of need. Whether helping the BM3 who suddenly faces unexpected pet boarding fees, or a family forced to stay in temporary lodging for weeks due to a delayed rental, CGMA fills the critical gaps when timing and costs don’t align. 

In 2024 alone, CGMA provided over $1.2 million in PCS-related assistance to Coast Guard families. With increasing costs of relocation the need continues to grow.
