« Return to NewsCGMA Leads the Way: The Only Aid Society Supporting the Coast Guard’s Total Workforce
As the government shutdown enters its 23rd day, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA) remains on watch — ensuring no one in our Coast Guard family faces financial hardship alone.
While Active Duty members received their last paycheck, hundreds of Coast Guard civilian employees continue to go without. Since October 10, CGMA has received more than $1.2 million in emergency aid requests from 471 civilian employees, with an average request of $2,648. Every loan is need-based and focused on helping shipmates cover essential expenses such as rent, childcare, insurance, and groceries.
CGMA is the only military aid society providing financial assistance to Coast Guard civilian employees — reflecting our commitment to serving the entire Coast Guard workforce.
For Eiric Kellogg, a program evaluator in Washington, D.C., this is the third shutdown in his two decades of federal service.
“My priorities are simple: make sure my family’s needs are met, take care of my health, and give back to my community,” he says.
A lifelong CGMA donor, Kellogg has contributed more than $5,200 over the years.
“CGMA embodies the Coast Guard tradition of passing the hat to support a shipmate in need. When you’re able, you give back. That’s what being shipmates means.”
Since 1924, CGMA has provided more than $250 million in direct financial support to the Coast Guard community — including $50 million in the past five years. During the 2018–2019 shutdown, CGMA delivered $8.4 million in aid to more than 6,200 members and families.
Today, CGMA is preparing to assist members again should the October 27th paycheck be missed. Civilian employees may reapply for assistance every 30 days while the shutdown continues. Active Duty applications remain open; however, funds for Active Duty shutdown loans will not be disbursed until October 31.
