Brooke Millard, CDR, USCG Ret.
Brooke Millard took the helm of Coast Guard Mutual Assistance in August 2024 following a remarkable 21-year Active Duty career as a cutterman and writer in the U.S. Coast Guard. Most recently she served as the captain of Bear and led her 100 crewmembers on five successful 60+ day deployments: one participating in an international exercise off Greenland as well as enforcing international fishing policy near the Flemish Cap; three conducting migrant interdiction operations in the Florida Straits; and a counter-narcotics deployment in which Bear interdicted 6 drug-laden vessels, preventing 8,500 pounds of cocaine from reaching the United States and keeping $90M out of the hands of criminals. Bear’s success was highlighted by both CNN and FoxNews.
Originally from Boxford, Massachusetts, Brooke earned her commission from the US Coast Guard Academy. She served 12 years at sea; 10 years as either Commanding Officer or Executive Officer.
Between tours afloat Brooke earned a Master of Arts in English from the University of Maryland and returned to the Coast Guard Academy to teach freshman writing and literature. She is the
author of 15 published articles about Coast Guard topics, including one within Thomas Friedman’s book Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in an Age of Accelerations. Brooke most recently applied her writing skills as sole speechwriter to the Commandant and Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard.
Brooke also served as the first Coast Guard Federal Executive Fellow to the US Naval Institute
and with the US Navy at Afloat Training Group, Norfolk. Brooke completed her JPME-1 certificate, is a licensed merchant mariner, and has been recognized as a Coast Guard
Educational Services Officer of the Year and runner-up Coast Guard Elite Athlete of the Year.
She has been decorated with the Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medal, the Coast Guard
Commendation Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal, among others.
Brooke is spouse to Jesse and mother of Peter (11) and Annie (10) of Davidsonville, Md.
