« Return to NewsCGMA Updates Supplemental Education Grant to Better Support Coast Guard Families

By CGMA Staff
Coast Guard Mutual Assistance has updated the Supplemental Education Grant for the 2026 cycle, making the program clearer, more consistent, and more responsive to feedback from the Coast Guard community.
The Supplemental Education Grant helps eligible Coast Guard members, spouses, and dependent children cover education-related expenses such as fees, books, study guides, supplies, equipment, and computers tied to qualifying education programs. For many families, these costs arrive all at once, often outside the reach of other education benefits. SEG helps close that gap. In the last two years, CGMA has provided more than $2.1 million in educational grants to the Coast Guard Community.
For 2026, CGMA has made several important updates designed to improve the applicant experience, strengthen communication with the fleet, and ensure available funds reach those with the greatest need.
Applications open June 1 and close Sept. 30, 2026. Applications submitted after Sept. 30 will not be processed. The Rep guidance confirms the defined open period, HQ approval process, and October notification timeline.
“We listened carefully to feedback from the fleet and made practical updates that reflect how Coast Guard families are pursuing education today,” said Jason Wong, CGMA Chief Operating Officer. “Whether it is a laptop, required materials, or education-related fees, the Supplemental Education Grant helps remove some of the financial pressure that can stand between a student and their next goal.”
The SEG provides up to $750 per household per calendar year to help offset eligible education-related expenses. Dual military families may be eligible for up to $1,500, with no more than $750 per student. Each application is reviewed carefully by CGMA HQ, and approval is not guaranteed. Awards are based on available funding.
Eligible applicants include Active Duty Coast Guard members, Coast Guard Reserve members, Coast Guard Auxiliary members, Civilian Employees, PHS Officers and Chaplains assigned to the Coast Guard, retired Coast Guard military personnel, and surviving spouses. CGMA members may apply on behalf of themselves, their spouse, or dependent children under age 23.
Qualifying education programs include undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs, approved multi-course vocational or technical programs, GED programs, correspondence courses that are part of a degree or vocational/technical certificate program, and advanced education tests such as Praxis or LSAT.
SEG does not cover tuition, childcare, field trips, food, ordinary school supplies, parking, transportation, general software, computer accessories, or subscriptions. Applicants should review the full list of covered and excluded expenses before applying.
Applicants are encouraged to work with their local CGMA Representative before submitting. Representatives can help review applications for completeness and accuracy, confirm required documentation is included, and ensure the packet is ready for CGMA HQ review. CGMA Representatives do not make approval decisions. Final approval decisions are made by CGMA HQ.
The 2026 SEG updates are about more than forms and deadlines. They are about making education support easier to understand, easier to access, and more aligned with the real needs of Coast Guard members and families.
Education is one of the ways Coast Guard families build stability, opportunity, and momentum. Through the Supplemental Education Grant, CGMA is proud to help make that path a little easier.
Applications open June 1, 2026. Learn more or apply at mycgma.org/programs/seg.
